POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

On the grounds that Biological Sciences are at the forefront of Sciences acquiring a broad and interdisciplinary nature and combining disciplines within and outside their traditional borders, Department of Biology offers the following Postgraduate Programes which, usually after four semesters of coursework and research, leading to the corresponding Master's degree (MSc):

Bioinformatics: Specializing in the use of high-level techniques and methods of Computer Science, Statistics and Mathematics to explore new ways of approaching and solving biological problems and better understanding the basic principles of Biology, because modern biological research generate large amounts of data requiring special tools for handling, storage, access, analysis and presentation.

Applications of Biology in Medicine (in collaboration with the School of Health Sciences): Advanced theoretical and practical further education - training of Biological and Medical Sciences graduates in subjects that are related to productive activities being developed rapidly in the field of Biology and Medicine, including: Molecular Diagnostics, Histology, Immunohistochemistry, Immunocytochemistry, Tissue cultures - Cell cultures, Microbiology - Virology, Electron Microscopy, Bioinformatics etc.

Clinical Biochemistry – Molecular Diagnostics (in collaboration with the Faculties of Chemistry and Nursing): High quality specialist training for young scientists by providing additional theoretical knowledge in a very dynamic area of modern science combined with practical training at University and Research Centers labs as well as at specialized laboratories of Hospitals and Diagnostic Centers, in order to create strains that would not only be able to take advantage of international expertise for the social and economic benefit, but also to contribute actively to the development of new technology in the early diagnosis of various diseases.

Modern Trends in the Teaching of Biology with the Aid of New Technologies: High level training of university and technological education graduates in subjects related to productive activities that currently being developed rapidly in the field of education. The taught courses cover subjects that are related to Biology, Research Methodology and Statistics, Environmental Education, Teaching with New Technologies, the base of Psychoeducational teaching, Genetics Expertise and fundamental rights of the individual in accordance with the principles of Bioethics and include lectures and laboratory exercises, as well as multimedia presentations by the learners.

Ecology & Conservation of Biodiversity: The post-graduate program is designed to promote the knowledge and research in cutting-edge topics currently implemented in the broader field of Ecology. Emphasis is given to the terrestrial ecosystems, the conservation of biodiversity and other ecological applications. The program aims to generate highly trained scientists, educated  in the current scientific and technological trends, equipped with skills which will enable them to apply modern research approaches on critical environmental issues related to the ecology and biodiversity conservation of terrestrial ecosystems (inland waters included).

Athens International Master’s Programme in Neurosciences (Διεθνές Π.Μ.Σ. στις  Νευροεπιστήμες) in collaboration with the Medical School and the Departments of Nursing and Dentistry, the Institute of Biomedical Research of the Academy of Athens, the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, the Research Center of Biomedical Sciences "Alexander Fleming", the National Center for Research in Natural Sciences "Demokritos" and the National Research Foundation. The purpose of the "Athens International Master's Program in Neurosciences" is to provide a high level of postgraduate education at the level of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in the field of Neuroscience.

Interinstitutional Postgraduate Programme in Biotechnology (in collaboration with the Institute of Chemical Biology of the National Research Foundation):

Interdepartmental Postgraduate Programme in Oceanography (in collaboration with the Faculties of Geology and Geoenviromment, Physics and Chemistry): High quality education and training of scientists who will become capable to deal with the study, management and protection of marine environment, contribute to the development of Oceanographic Science and meet the relevant requirements both in Greece and in Europe and internationally, as the staffing of various services with specialists is necessary, especially in coastal and insular areas, in order to promote the implementation of projects, the development of research programs, the control of marine pollution and the proper management of marine resources.
